BSE Highlights - sectoral indices

Highlights

After opening on a flat note the markets traded in a narrow band till the afternoon session. The markets slipped sharply lower in afternoon session but recovered some of the losses before ending the day on a weak note.

Among the sectoral indices Capital Goods & Power witnessed some selling pressure while FMCG gained marginally. Among the Sensex stocks M&M (2.89%), Wipro (0.75%) and Tata Steel (0.73%) were the gainers while Hindalco (2.46%), Tata Power (2.28%) and ONGC (2.24%) were the major losers.

 The Sensex lost 130 points or 0.74% to close at 17,374 and the Nifty lost 42 points or 0.77% to close at 5,291.

Total traded turnover stood at Rs 156,743 cr. In equities both FIIs & DIIs were net buyers of (Rs 314 cr) & (Rs 135 cr) respectively.

On the derivatives side, FIIs were net sellers in Index Futures (Rs 103 cr) , Stock Futures (Rs 499 cr) and Stock Options (Rs 30 cr) while they were net buyers in Index Options (Rs 391 cr).

The US markets ended mixed amidst declines in banks and technology shares and better than expected earnings from McDonald's, General Electric and Microsoft.  The Dow Jones gained 65 points or 0.50% to close at 13,029 while NASDAQ lost 7 points or 0.24% to close at 3,000.

The Asian markets are trading lower. Nikkei is trading lower by 0.29% while Hang Seng is trading lower by 0.69%.
