BSE Index Analysis - morning bell 4 May

Tracking soft global cues the markets opened marginally lower but managed to trade sideways till the mid-session. The markets gradually drifted lower and ended the day on a weak note. Majority of the sectors ended in the red with Auto being the major loser while IT witnessed some buying. Among the Sensex stocks HCL (2.02%), Wipro (1.93%) and TCS (1.00%) were the gainers while Hero Motocorp (7.69%), Maruti Suzuki (3.06%) and Tata Steel (3.00%) were the losers. The Sensex lost 151 points or 0.87% to close at 17,151 and the Nifty lost 51 points or 0.97% to close at 5,188.

Total traded turnover stood at Rs 93,133 cr. In equities FIIs were net of buyers of (Rs 74 cr) while DIIs were net sellers of (Rs 347 cr) .On the derivatives side, FIIs were net sellers in Index Futures ( Rs 237 cr), & Stock Futures( Rs 216 cr) while they were net buyers in Index Options ( Rs 494 cr) and Stock Options (Rs 1 cr).

The US markets ended lower amidst mixed economic data and comments from ECB that Euro-zone continues to face economic uncertainty despite signs of stabilization in the first quarter. The Dow Jones lost 62 points or 0.47% to close at 13,207 while NASDAQ lost 36 points or 1.16% to close at 3,024.

An upbeat assessment of the region's economy by the ECB chief with no further signs of monetary stimulus measures lead to a sell- off in the global markets. Indian indices are also expected to open lower amidst bearish sentiments across the globe with further direction being laid down by global developments.

The Asian markets are trading mixed. Nikkei is trading higher by 0.31% while Hang Seng is trading lower by 0.60%
