The markets opened on a soft note and moved in a narrow range with a negative bias till noon session. The benchmarks indices eventually managed to extend its gains for the second consecutive trading session to end the day near the dayⳠhigh. The broad based recovery was led by sectors across the board.
Among the sectoral indices Consumer durables gained 5.6%, Auto & Realty gained 2% each, while Oil & Gas, FMCG were the major losers. In the Sensex stocks Tata Motors (4.89%), Bharti Airtel (4.41%), and Cipla (3.12%) were the gainers while Hind Unilever (1.84%), ONGC (1.34%), and ITC (1.26%) were among the losers. The Sensex gained 56 points or 0.30% to close at 18,562 and the Nifty gained 25 point or 0.46% to close at 5,645.
Total traded turnover stood at Rs 141602 cr. In equities FIIs were net buyers (Rs 335 cr), while DIIs were net sellers (Rs 154 cr). On the derivatives side, FIIs were net sellers in Stock Options (Rs 75 cr) while they were net buyers in Index Futures (Rs 233 cr) , Index Options (Rs 994 cr), Stock Futures (Rs 110 cr).
The US markets ended higher after on the heels of the release of a batch of largely upbeat economic data, including a report from payroll processor Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP) showing stronger than expected private sector job growth. The Dow Jones gained 136 points or 1% to close at 13,233 while the NASDAQ gained 43 points or 1.4 % to close at 3020.
