Tracking mixed cues from Asian peers the markets opened on marginally positive and witnessed volatility. After initial up move the markets slipped into the red and kept on moving lower throughout the session ending the day with moderate losses. Among the sectoral indices Metals gained the most while IT lost more than 1%. In the Sensex stocks Sterlite (4.06%), Hindalco (3.46%) & Jindal Steel (2.36%) were the gainers while Bharti Airtel (3.69%), TCS (2.83%) & HDFC (1.85%) were among the losers. The Sensex lost 73 points or 0.38% to close at 19,244 and the Nifty lost 22 points or 0.37% to close at 5,858.
Total traded turnover stood at Rs 142,666 cr. In equities FIIs were net buyers of (Rs 887 cr) while DIIs were net sellers of (Rs 690 cr). On the derivatives side, FIIs were net buyers in Index Futures (Rs 65 cr) Index Options (Rs 558 cr) while they were net sellers in Stock Futures (Rs 479 cr), Stock Options (Rs 46 cr)..
The US markets ended higher led by gains in financial and technology stocks as investors remained optimistic on progress of negotiations over the "fiscal cliff" issue. The Dow Jones gained 100 points or 0.76% to close at 13,235 while the NASDAQ gained 39 points or 1.32% to close at 3,011.
Asian markets are trading higher as U.S President Barack Obama made concessions in negotiations to break the budget impasse and on speculation that the Japanese central bank may ease monetary policy. Indian indices are expected to open on a flat to positive note and global cues along with RBI mid-quarter monetary policy will be closely watched for further direction.
The Asian markets are trading positive. Nikkei is trading higher by 0.97% and Hang Seng is currently trading higher by 0.13%.
