The markets opened on a soft note and traded flattish till the noon session. The markets edged lower in the post noon session but manged to close the day with minor gains. Among the sectoral indices Oil & Gas gained more than 1% while Consumer Durables & IT lost more than 0.50% each. In the Sensex stocks Tata Power (4.00%), RIL (2.49%) and SBI (1.59%) were the major gainers while M&M (1.75%), Wipro (1.65%) and NTPC (1.34%) were among the losers. The Sensex gained 43 points or 0.22% to close at 19,348 and the Nifty gained 18 points or 0.31% to close at 5,889..
Total traded turnover stood at Rs 127,839 cr. In equities FIIs were net buyers of (Rs 540 cr) while DIIs were net sellers of (Rs 434 cr). On the derivatives side, FIIs were net sellers in Index Futures (Rs 309 cr), Stock Futures (Rs 497 cr) and Stock Options (Rs 74 cr) Index Options (Rs 151 cr).
The US markets ended lower in a lackluster session as investors remained on the sidelines over continuing concerns over fiscal cliff issue.. The Dow Jones lost 14 points or 0.11% to close at 12,952 and the NASDAQ lost 6 points or 0.18% to close at 2,997.
Asian markets are trading higher, with prices capped by continuing concerns over whether the United States can avert an economic slump as lawmakers struggle to break a budget impasse by year end. Indian indices are also expected to open on a flattish note and direction is expected to be laid down by progress in the domestic Parliament session.
